BACKGROUND:

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is looking for a self-motivated, team player to lead the development of the Scaling Up Nutrition Business Network (SBN) in Nepal. The SBN is one of four global networks within the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement which supports 61 Countries, including Nepal, to develop multi-stakeholder strategies to scale up nutrition at national level. The SBN is the principal vehicle for business engagement in SUN, both in informing the ongoing policy, advocacy and knowledge sharing agenda and in mobilizing businesses at national level in support of SUN national nutrition strategies. Globally, 12 National SBNs have been established. The SBN Nepal’s ambition is to increase the availability and affordability of safe, nutritious foods in Nepal through:

  1. Convening and organizing business around national nutrition priorities;
  2. Assessing the challenges and opportunities facing businesses in scaling up their actions and investments in nutrition and facilitating partnerships at national and global level to support national businesses
  3. Improving the enabling environment for business to take action on nutrition, including fostering strong links and partnerships with key national stakeholders

JOB PURPOSE

The SBN Coordinator will serve as the main link between SUN Business Network members, Government and other key stakeholders, and will lead on all activities linked to the Network, including the development and dissemination of the SBN strategy, raising awareness and mobilizing stakeholders. These efforts will feed directly into the Country’s broader SUN and nutrition agendas.

SBN Coordinator will support the establishment of SBN and ongoing operations of SBN in Nepal, with the aim of increasing engagement of the Private Sector in nutrition in the country.  S/he will closely collaborate with business associations and relevant government institution to facilitate public-private partnership linked to improving nutrition. In addition, the SBN Coordinator will help to guide and support capacity strengthening, program development and implementation work plan of the SBN.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

Under the overall guidance of the Nutrition Advisor (Head of Nutrition Unit) and other management team members, the incumbent shall carry out the following tasks

1. Develop a strategy for SBN Nepal using a highly consultative process

a. Carry out a situation analysis to identify potential entry points for private sector engagement, as well as understand and define private sector opportunities/priorities and challenges that includes:

    • A mapping of key private sector partners
    • A review of relevant national policy and strategic documents
    • Carrying out of bilateral and group consultations with key stakeholders (government, private, civil society and donors) (also related to (2a) below)

b. Lead on the development of SBN Nepal Strategy

2. Raise awareness about the SBN among key stakeholders in Nepal

a. Organize meetings (one on one and in groups), workshops and use other channels to raise awareness on SBN among key stakeholders in Nepal

b. Coordinate with the organizing committee of the Global Nutrition Gathering to host SBN Nepal/private sector engagement event alongside SUN Global Gathering

c. Support the development and distribution of information, education and communication materials to promote value proposition for business to join and support the      SBN

3. Mobilize businesses/private sector partners to increase awareness of role in nutrition

a. Inform the private sector around the potential role they can play in contributing to national nutrition priorities, including the value proposition to them for engaging      in this space 

b. Recruit and retain high profile and committed SUN Business Network members from Nepal’s private sector and other key stakeholder groups

c. Plan and organize regular meetings/update opportunities for SBN Core Team Together with NPC, develop the SBN Advisory Group Terms of Reference

5. Coordination, Communication and Reporting

a. Develop and maintain an ongoing register of major private sector issues, challenges opportunities and recommendations for change.

b. Liaise with relevant government stakeholders on a regular basis to share private sector issues, challenges and opportunities and advocate for recommendations and policy changes in relevant identified areas.

c. Compile and disseminate lessons on establishment and operation of SBN, as well as regularly updating using various media channels

d. Prepare database of SBN members, and track member information and Network activities via SBN Database

e. Document key lessons and best practices of the private sector contributing improved nutrition and food security

f. Prepare and submit periodic progress report to the NPC and WFP  

g. Carry out other tasks as required, to support the day-to-day activities of WFP and NPC’s engagement with the private sector on nutrition in Nepal

General Requirements:

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Master’s degree in business, management, marketing, international development or related field. BSc Degree with reasonable experiences will be considered.

Experience:

  • 5-6 years of postgraduate professional experience, in either the private sector or on private sector related development projects is essential. Knowledge of nutrition will be an added advantage. 
  • Experienced partnership broker with strong relationship management skills and familiarity with managing a wide platform of stakeholders
  • Experience in communications and advocacy, in particular with the private sector

Lanugages: Fluency in both written and spoken English language, and Nepali Languages.

DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE

  • Has gained experience in implementing technical programs (i.e. nutrition, etc.).
  • Has implemented programmes and provided input into designing operations.
  • Has provided input into policy discussions and decisions.
