POSITION: PROJECT ENGINEER
Function: Technical
Job Location: Based in Kavre / Sindhupalchowk / Rasuwa / Nuwakot with frequent travel to other areas of Nepal

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

Founded in 2004, Build Change is a non‐profit social enterprise whose mission is to save lives in earthquakes and hurricanes. Build Change designs safe buildings, trains homeowners, builders, engineers and government officials to build them, works with governments to develop and implement building standards, partners with the private sector to improve building materials quality and create jobs, and facilitates access to incentive-based capital for reconstruction and retrofitting by partnering with financing institutions and government subsidy programs. Build Change started its work in Aceh, Indonesia, after the 2004 earthquake and tsunami, and since has expanded to include programs in China, Haiti, Colombia, Guatemala, the Philippines and Nepal. Build Change has trained more than 25,300 people on earthquake-resistant design and construction techniques, guided 31 organizations in using homeowner-driven design, created almost 12,000 jobs and provided technical assistance for more than 48,700 safer buildings, impacting an estimated 245,026 people.
 
POSITION DESCRIPTION 

Under the direct supervision of Lead Structural Engineer, Project Engineer will be responsible for community construction projects with seismic retrofit design and constructions.
 
Technical Responsibilities

  • Development of technical manuals, guidelines and other technical documents in close coordination with the Lead Structural Engineer.
  • Analyze resource needs and market demand to plan and assess the feasibility of projects.
  • Assign, direct, supervise and evaluate the work of junior engineers.
  • Document lessons learned and assist/advise in improving practices.

 
Project Management Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and direct projects, making detailed plans for timely completion of projects and to accomplish goals.
  • Undertake regular assessment of the efficiency and effectiveness of the technical service delivery mechanism and recommend improvements.
  • Extend relationship and networking with different actors at national and international levels in the interest of Build Change.
  • Maintain ownership of project milestones and schedule, and communicate and report regularly to the management about the project progress and any issues that arise which may affect progress.
  • Prepare monthly reports and contribute to internal and external project reporting.

 
Qualifications:

  • A Master degree in Civil Engineering with minimum 5 years professional experience in earthquake resistant design and construction of buildings. Work experience in community led building projects will be an added advantage.
  • No ego, drama, or pessimism; the successful candidate will be flexible, humble, patient, and have a good sense of humor.
  • Fluent English and Nepali.
