Job description Title: Production Manager, Sajha Sawal

Location: Kathmandu, with travel throughout Nepal

Reports To: Editor, Sajha Sawal

Duration: 10 Months Context BBC Media Action uses various forms of media and communications to tackle poverty and contribute to long-term change in some of the world’s poorest places.

To achieve this, we partner with civil society, local media and governments to:

• Produce creative programmes based on robust research in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues.

• Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure BBC Media Action in Nepal is implementing a DFID-funded project, which aims to support democratic governance by encouraging political accountability.

We produce a high profile radio and TV discussion programme, Sajha Sawal, a popular debate show which allows ordinary people from all over Nepal to meet face to face with public figures and raise the issues that matter most to them.

Job purpose

Reporting to the Sajha Sawal Editor, the Production Manager will work closely alongside the Editor and Senior Producers to ensure that the weekly debates are produced to BBC required standards and within budget allocations. The Production Manager will oversee all business, financial and compliance aspects of the weekly debate show. The role will require the Production Manager to drive innovation, change and ensure continuous improvements are implemented throughout the production process. Working collaboratively with the Editor and Senior Producers, the Production Manager will have responsibility for planning all stages of the production cycle of the debates including pre-production, recording and post-production activities. He/she will raise the quality of all programme outputs and will develop a supportive working relationship with the production and broadcast partners of Sajha Sawal. The Production Manager will have responsibility for making sure that all debates recorded in Kathmandu and other districts across Nepal are produced within BBC Health and Safety guidelines and that the production team adheres to best practice in these areas. The Production Manager will play an important role in helping shape the production processes and format of Sajha Sawal.

Main Duties

• To take overall responsibility for the production systems and resources used in the making of the Sajha Sawal debates and maximize their use effectively.

• Oversee the overall logistical planning and execution of production and scheduling of Sajha Sawal in close liaison with the Editor, and ensure effectiveness and value for money.

• Develop production plans for the debates and produce all required paperwork including contacts lists, production schedules, call sheets and risk assessments.

• Manage production budgets effectively and undertake financial monitoring and reporting.

• Ensure compliance of the Sajha Sawal productions with BBC Media Action best practice for finance and administration.

• Accountable for ensuring compliance with Procurement policies and guidelines for the procurement of production resources.

• Ensure contracts are in place with partners and suppliers and manage those relationships as appropriate.

• Jointly accountable with editorial colleagues for delivering demonstrable value for money through effective and efficient management of people and resources.

• Ensure systems are in place to manage production resources effectively and efficiently including all production equipment and edit facilities.

• Observe BBC Production Guidelines and ensure they are fully understood by other team members and production partners.

• Help maintain and ensure that BBC Health and Safety guidelines are observed throughout the debate production; that staff are trained and briefed to manage risks, and if necessary seeks advice at the earliest possible stage.

• Line manage the Floor Manager (part-time) of Sajha Sawal.

• Responsible for understanding and championing the rationale for new ways of working and/or for adopting new production related technology

• Raising and maintaining quality of all output of Sajha Sawal.

• Production manage other BBC Media Action projects in Nepal as required.

Job Specification

Essential skills and experience

• Extensive experience in logistics planning and execution especially in the field of television and radio production.

• Ability to manage vendors, contractors and production staff in studio and on location.

• Proven experience in managing production budgets effectively and to targets.

• Strong commitment to BBC Production and Health and Safety Guidelines.

• Experience in managing productions within Health and Safety guidelines.

• A proven track record of working with diverse teams.

• Able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.

• Clear understanding of the aims and values of BBC Media Action and an awareness of the development goals of our programming.

• Good computer skills and experience in using excel for budgeting and planning tasks.

• A good understanding of the broadcasting industry in Nepal and the technologies used in programme making.

Desirable skills and experience

• Experience working in the development sector in Nepal or elsewhere.
