Context 
 
BBC Media Action uses various forms of media and communications to tackle poverty and contribute to long-term change in some of the world’s poorest places. To achieve this, we partner with civil society, local media and governments to:
 
  • Produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences; 
  • Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.
 
BBC Media Action is the international development charity of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).  Working in 28 countries, we use media and communications to inform, empower and connect people.  BBC Media Action reaches some 200 million people through local broadcast partners, BBC channels, online, mobile and print platforms and through interpersonal communication.  
 
In Nepal our work focuses on governance, humanitarian response, and addressing sexual violence. We produce a high profile radio and TV discussion programme, Sajha Sawal, and Lifeline radio programme Milijuli Nepali. We also deliver training and coaching/mentoring initiatives that support media colleagues to produce local debate programmes, radio dramas, and life-line radio programmes. The research team provides formative, pre-testing and evaluative research to support the development of media interventions and to evaluate impact. The Scriptwriter Consultant will support our radio drama development under our OFDA supported project directly addressing the earthquake response, recovery and reconstruction and planning for risk reduction in Nepal. BBC Media Action is collaborating with Radio Nepal to deliver these drama series. 
 
Job purpose
Reporting to the Editor, the consultant will be responsible to provide consultancy on writing script for the radio drama on earthquake response in line with BBC Media Action lifeline programme. The Consultant will work alongside the producers developing scripts for drama in a collaborative manner with Radio Nepal. Consultant will be responsible for ensuring the issues are treated sensitively and responsibly in the dramas, with due regard for the audience members who may have been affected on a personal level by the issues. 
 
Main Duties
  • Produce scripts for the drama.
  • Provide guidance on writing engaging and creative scripts for the drama which conform to the communication/ message brief and meet editorial requirements in terms of format, length, quality of drama and storytelling. 
  • Ensure lively, engaging scripts for each storyline in collaboration with the Editor and the producers on the team.
  • Contribute to capacity building and training as and when required
  • Work alongside the Radio Nepal drama team including producers, scrip writers, contributors on executing the themes of drama.
  • Work with Editor to design creative briefs of the radio dramas.
  • Other project activities as per the needs of the project and as delegated by Editor &/or CD.
 
 
Essential skills and experience
 
  • Demonstrate a minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience; production/script writing. 
  • Experience of providing guidance for the radio drama production. 
  • Good grasp of the issues in post-earthquake recovery and reconstruction in Nepal and ability to dramatize for the radio. 
  • Excellent written Nepali and good grasp of colloquial Nepali as spoken by people with limited education and good conversational English. 
  • Wide familiarity with Nepal  and an in-depth understanding of the country’s history, politics, social issues, mindsets and attitudes  and contemporary issues; 
  • Well-developed understanding of key development needs of Nepal.
  • A proven track record in providing consultancy for media outputs.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and organize time effectively within a range of often conflicting deadlines.  
  • The ability to forge strong working relations quickly and gain the trust of project stakeholders, including partners.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken Nepali/English.
