Based:                         Kathmandu office, with travel to field locations

Duration:                    1 year with possible extension

 

Context:

BBC Media Action uses various forms of media and communications to tackle poverty and contribute to long-term change in some of the world’s poorest places. To achieve this, we partner with civil society, local media and governments to:

  • Produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences
  • Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure

In Nepal our work focuses on governance, humanitarian response, and addressing sexual violence. We produce a high profile radio and TV discussion programme, Sajha Sawal, and Lifeline radio programme Milijuli Nepali. We also deliver training and coaching/mentoring initiatives that support media colleagues to produce local debate programmes, radio dramas, and life-line radio programmes.

Job Purpose:

The position will coordinate all external and internal communications for BBC Media Action Nepal programmes and, supports the communications needs of BBC Media Action headquarters. This will include the production of all electronic/print-based marketing material and project briefs, drafting of press releases and other external communications, planning events, maintaining adherence to branding guidelines, and ensuring staff are equipped with the necessary information and policies to carry out their work effectively. Successful candidates must have strong interpersonal, written, communication and organisational skills. In addition, s/he provides BBC Media Action Nepal Office with brand compliance and management support, and will also be responsible for social media update for all the programmes under BBC Media Action Nepal.

Main Duties:

  1. Develop and implement a coherent, balanced and integrated communication strategy for BBC Media Action Nepal projects, using various mechanisms and information distribution channels, such as events, PR, Web and social media.
  2. Produce high quality communication materials including blogs, reports, multi-media presentations for internal as well as external audiences.
  3. Ensure that all promotional and communications products and platforms are consistent with brand standards and are of high-quality and accurate.
  4. Coordinate and support the production of high quality internal communication materials, identifying opportunities for members of the Nepal team to contribute Blogs to the main BBC Media Action website.
  5. Coordinate content for narrative reports on programme implementation, monthly management reports, among others on a timely basis.
  6. Work with the Country Director to deliver internal communications pertaining to organizational developments.
  7. Provide editing and proofreading to staff as requested in both English and Nepali. Manage the BBC Media Action Nepal office external website. Ensure that all information is up to date and accurate.
  8. Distribute organizational messages, prepare presentations and internal memos to convey policy and guidelines, and train staff.
  9. Draft and issue press releases, arrange interviews and compile press kits.
  10. Build alliances with communications practitioners and networks in Nepal.
  11. Maintain a calendar of conferences, events, competitions and identify opportunities to relevant staff.
  12. Share information and input on the Nepal programme to support new business development effort.
  13. Document success stories and work with the Research and Learning team to publish and disseminate research products. 
  14. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Country Director.
  15. Act as the brand champion for BBC Media Action Nepal office and ensure that all branding guidelines are followed and adhered to.
  16. Contribute to the development of standard BBC Media Action communications protocols for humanitarian emergencies in line with existing agreements with BBC Nepali Service as well as Lifeline programme plans.
  17. Assist in developing emergency communication preparedness plans.
  18. Develop a media list for Nepal and support any media activity as requested by the CD.
  19. Monitor coverage of key BBC Media Action issues in national and regional media and track mention of BBC Media Action media hits i.e. reference to Sajha Sawal programs. Produce a list of relevant media articles each week and distribute to the wider team.
  20. Act as “brand champion” for BBC Media Action in Nepal; ensure that all BBC products, communications, and action follow brand guidelines.
  21. Plan and host donors and in conjunction with senior management and relevant staff.  This includes preparing background materials, arranging appointments, accompanying the visits, etc.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • An interest in the role of media and communications in development. Ability to maintain, nurture and develop existing and new media contacts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Nepali and English, with experience in translation and transcription, conveying messages to different audiences using diverse media and experience in editing and proofreading corporate communication documents for public dissemination.
  • Thorough knowledge of MS-Office Suite, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email applications.
  • An ability to work to tight deadlines and to balance often conflicting demands.
  • An ability to get one’s message understood clearly by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and the nature of the information.
  • Commitment to BBC Media Action’s vision, mission and objectives.
  • Flexibility, creativity and effectiveness in working collaboratively in a multicultural team.
