Context

BBC Media Action uses various forms of media and communications to tackle poverty and contribute to long-term change in some of the world’s poorest places.  To achieve this, we partner with civil society, local media and governments to:

- Produce creative programmes based on robust research in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues.

- Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

Supported by funds from the UK Department for International Development and other donors, BBC Media Action delivers training and development for the broadcast media sector in Nepal.  We are seeking a Training Officer to continue a project aimed at improving community radio stations’ editorial and technical capacity to broadcast news and other genres, with the aim of better serving audience needs.

Job purpose

The Training Officer will support BBC Media Action’s capacity building with Nepal’s broadcast sector. The postholder will build on our needs assessments and the successes and challenges of previous years to further improve technical and editorial standards, particularly in the production of news and current affairs programming. S/he will spend considerable periods of time working alongside programme makers in radio stations outside the capital Kathmandu, co-ordinating on-the-job training and mentoring.  The postholder will also work closely with managers within the broadcast sector in Nepal to arrange training on editorial strategy, news operations and organizational development. The training officer will support the identification, recruitment and support of ad hoc consultants to contribute to the training programme. The postholder will also support the Project Director in developing the strategy for BBC Media Action in Nepal.

Main Duties

  1. Design and deliver creative and engaging trainings and workshops using tested and valued adult learning techniques to media and development sector professionals, on a range of technical, editorial and genre-specific skills related to media and communication.
  2. Design and implement multi-media training materials and courses and ensure the dissemination of these through various platforms and formats including distance learning.
  3. Ensure high quality translations of all training materials produced by the team.
  4. Ensure that all training meets the highest BBC standards, and delivers to the project objectives and donor contractual requirements.
  5. Support broadcasters to use findings from audience research and feedback to refine and improve programme outputs in response to audience needs.
  6. Assist with project co-ordination, including work planning, financial management, ensuring health and safety of project staff, and liaising with project donors and partners as required.
  7. Provide logistical and co-ordination support of projects which build the capacity of the broadcast sector in Nepal.
  8. Support training of trainers initiatives
  9. Support narrative and financial reports on project implementation.
  10. Support the Project Director and others in business development of new projects.
  11. Work alongside broadcasters and develop constructive and engaging relationships with a range of staff across ACORAB and major broadcasters.
  12. Hold learning events evaluate learning approaches as appropriate.

Essential skills and experience

  1. Proven track record of training design and implementation preferably in the media sector.
  2. Understanding and practical know how of adult learning techniques.
  3. Strong understanding of the role of communications in development.
  4. Experience of successful project management, ideally in the development field, training projects.
  5. Experience in working with contracts, ideally within the broadcast sector
  6. Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of BBC editorial values
  7. Experience working in either media or development.
  8. Strong communication skills including the ability to write well in English and Nepali.Excellent attention to detail.
