Role overview
It is an exciting time to join VSO in Nepal, one of our largest programmes in Asia and the Pacific. You will lead VSO country office in Nepal as we embark on an exciting and ambitious phase of expansion building on our highly-regarded programmes in Inclusive Education, Gender and Inclusive Governance and Youth Volunteering.We work with state and non-state partners and the most disadvantaged communities, and draw on our unique competencies in different forms of volunteerism and active citizenship. For the right individual this could be a transformational career opportunity. 

In this role you will provide strategic leadership for a team of staff and volunteers to ensure delivery of VSO’s current programmes and commitments while developing ambitious plans and strategies to maintain and grow our presence in Nepal. You will be accountable for the operations, business development and impact of VSO programmes, ensuring a high level of accountability and high quality development and delivery of VSO programming with our unique volunteering for development approach and People First framework are at the heart of all that we do and that we deliver sustainable change with our primary actors. As one of the VSO’s senior leadership network, you will be working with a team in country and globally to lead changes. It's important that you lead the team to achieve VSO's strategic objectives and meet ambitious funding targets to maintain and grow the programme in Nepal. You will build on excellent relations and engage with a wide range of stakeholders including government authorities, multilateral and bilateral agencies, civil society, corporate sector and other important actors to extend the influence that VSO can have, building on our core competencies and the voices of primary actors to bring about positive change. 

Put simply, this is a hugely important role and your leadership will be critical to our success in bringing people together to fight against poverty and make a real difference to the lives of poor people in Nepal.

 

Skills, qualifications and experience required
We are looking for an experienced leader with practical programming experience in international development sector looking for a new challenge, you will be a strategic thinker with excellent leadership skills. You will have a proven track record of successfully leading transformative change in a large and complex operations, developing business and securing funding, ideally within challenging environments. A practical experience of participatory evidence-based programming approach with good understanding of the role of volunteerism in development and ability to influence and engage with others will be crucial. You will understand development issues in complex and rapidly-changing contexts like Nepal and have sectoral knowledge in some or all of the fields of education, governance, social accountability, resilience, social inclusion and gender. You will be politically sensitive with excellent representational, networking, influencing and engagement skills. You will bring with you good verbal and written communications skills in English and local languages and good financial management understanding and experience. Your ability to shape the future with your determination, adaptability and commitment to VSO will be key for success.

There will be substantial travel within the country and occasional travel internationally.
