Job Description

Reports to: Principal/ Vice Principal (Head of Elementary School)

Qualification, Skills and Aptitude

  • Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science (B. Lib.),
  • A minimum 2 years of work experience as a school librarian,

Main Purpose of Job

The School Librarian is responsible for organizing and managing collections of journals, books, magazines, newspapers, electronic documents, and other data resources so that students and staff have access to information. Librarians are responsible for encouraging a love of reading and research in all students.

Academic Description

  • Responsible for responsible for organizing and managing collections of journals, books, magazines, newspapers, electronic documents, and other data resources for students and staff,
  • Guide students to books and texts of the appropriate reading level in order to develop in each student an appreciation for books and reading,
  • At the elementary school level, librarians may collaborate with classroom teachers to design and implement lessons and units of instruction around story time sessions,
  • Plan and organize the events around reading and research (book fair, author quiz etc),
  • Assist grade teachers with class assemblies and performances,
  • Guide students in the proper care and use of library equipment (computers, index system),
  • Keep a record of book issues, retuned of each student on a termly basis and prepare reports regarding the same,
  • Communicate with parents and Level Coordinators on student interest and concerns,
  • Participate in curriculum development (Grade 1-5) and book selection teams,
  • Check the attendance of students during library time,
  • Under the guidance and with approval from the Vice Principal (HofES) review books and other resources, review syllabuses and contribute to the design, evaluation and development of departmental and/or annual curriculum schemes of work and policy.

Non-Academic Responsibilities

  • Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection,
  • Select and requisition instructional materials and text (books, Magazines, newspapers etc) and maintain required inventory records,
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school,
  • Attend assemblies, meetings, parent events, presentations including on weekends as required,
  • Maintain cordial relation and communication with other school staff members,
  • Ensure effective utilization of resources, materials and equipment. (Closing class room windows, turning off the lights, and locking the door when leaving their room. All rooms should be left neat and orderly.),
  • Monitor and supervise students during arrival, lunch, recess, dismissal and any other time in order to help enforce school policies and procedures during transition time.
