Job Description

Health Research and Social Development Forum (HERD), a national organization working in the health and social development sector calls for application from dedicated and dynamic professionals for the position of Statistician/Data Specialist for a period of at least one year (subject to further extension based on performance) having a post graduate degree in Statistics, Demography, Public Health or related field with at least 5 years of demonstrable experience preferably in the health sector.

We require and desire for an experienced senior-level employee who is efficient in managing and analysing large sets of quantitative data drawn from various research and evaluation studies. He/She will be based in central office in Kathmandu and will work closely with the Executive Chairperson and Senior Project Managers for effective planning and execution of research and evaluation studies. The Statistician will have a key research based position leading the Data Management and Analysis Unit – managing other Data Analysts, Monitoring and Evaluation Officers, Data Management Officers/Assistants and Data Entry Clerks. He/She should also be in tune with the latest systems – highly competent in using standard statistical software such as SPSS, STATA and R and well versed in e-data, both in terms of database design and management (preferably demonstrable skill in using Open Data Kit platform). Overall, he/she should be a thorough professional – with a good blend of technical and managerial skills to contribute as well as supervise the data related outputs produced by HERD.

Key Responsibilities (KRs)

The job centers analysis of data collected through various research and evaluation studies around and routine oversight of data management functions. Reporting to the Executive Chairperson, the Statistician/Data Specialist will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Oversee collation, evaluation, interpretation and presentation of quantitative data.
  • Perform high level data analysis of big datasets from various research and evaluation studies.
  • Supervise regular data management functions to comply with standardized data management practice of the organization.
  • Acquire data from primary or secondary data sources and maintain databases/data systems.
  • Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets.
  • Provide key inputs during research design, study tools development and training of data collectors as well as conduct field monitoring to ensure quality of data produced from the respective research/evaluation studies.
  • Evaluate sources of information in order to determine any limitations in terms of reliability or usability.
  • Develop robust data management and data confidentiality guidelines/protocols and ensure effective implementation and compliance of those policy documents.
  • Communicate and coordinate with respective data focal persons of organizational clients to ensure that the collected and analysed data is in line with project deliverables and the purpose/objective of the respective research/evaluation studies.
  • Work in close coordination with the respective Project Managers to develop various data management protocols/guidelines as well as to understand the specific data outputs of the respective research/evaluation studies.
  • Contribute to capacity development initiatives of the organization by providing various trainings/workshops on effective data management and analysis and mentoring interested young professionals through practical sessions.
