Job Description

The Center seeks a Communications Coordinator, Asia who will report directly to the Senior Press Officer with a dotted reporting line to the Regional Director for Asia. The Communications Coordinator will oversee communications and communications-related capacity-building initiatives for the Asia Program and three partner organizations as part of a new project funded by Amplify Change. The Communications Coordinator will also support overall work in Asia, including the Center’s South Asia Reproductive Justice and Accountability Initiative (SARJAI), a legal advocacy network focused on use of the law and legal strategies to protect and promote women’s reproductive rights in the region. The Communications Coordinator will work closely with the Center’s New York-based Communications Team and Asia Program to develop, implement, and monitor traditional and online media surrounding the Center for Reproductive Rights’ work in Asia. The Communications Coordinator will also work closely with key partners to develop their communications capacity, facilitate technical assistance, and create joint communications strategies in support of legal and advocacy initiatives. This position is based in Kathmandu, Nepal and is open to citizens of Nepal only.

Responsibilities:

The Communications Coordinator’s primary job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with the Senior Press Officer and the Manager of Global Online Advocacy and Engagement to identify opportunities and develop communications strategies to publicize the Center’s work and issues in the region and assist partners in publicizing their work and issues to key audiences;
  • Developing press materials (press releases, statements, pitch letters, op-eds, letters to the editor, talking points, press kits, etc.) and other writing projects as needed;
  • Building a robust database of international and regional media contacts, and ensuring it is current and constantly expanding as reporter assignments change;
  • Preparing Center spokespeople and Asia key partners for press interviews and public appearances, including drafting talking points and key messages and providing both formal media training and informal prep sessions prior to each interview;
  • Defining key objectives, work plan, timeline and key deliverables for communications components of SARJAI and core partners within joint projects with the Asia Program—reporting regularly to the Asia and U.S. offices;
  • Conducting a needs assessment of partner communications programs as they relate to aspects of joint activities, as well as identifying additional opportunities for capacity-building;
  • Identifying opportunities for joint traditional and/or online communications initiatives with partner and making recommendations on how to strategically advance these initiatives;
  • Identifying and supervising local media and communications consultants (with support from Senior Press Officer and Manager of Global Online Advocacy & Engagement as needed) to support and complement the Center’s communications efforts in Asia; and
  • Other responsibilities as needed.

Job Specification

Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to the Center’s mission, purpose, and values;
  • Bachelor’s or equivalent advanced degree in communications, journalism, public/media relations, or a related field;
  • Three to five years of experience in progressive media, journalism, and/or public relations, and a track record of media in raising the visibility of political, social, and cultural issues and organizations, and shaping public debate;
  • Proven ability to manage the workflow of projects, including facilitating project scope, identifying goals and deliverables; planning and scheduling project timelines; and monitoring project progress;
  • Experience in providing non-profit communications support (e.g. drafting press releases, developing online strategies) and in expanding and the communications knowledge, capabilities, and resources of non-profit organizations;
  • Fluency in English and Nepali (Hindi a plus);
  • Ability to travel within Nepal and abroad as needed;
  • Broad awareness and deep understanding of both global and South East Asia media landscapes, as well current and developing strategies for communicating effectively in a continually and rapidly evolving media environment;
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills;
  • Experience in online advocacy strategy and implementation, including social media and email marketing, a plus;
  • Experience developing content for a variety of materials (e.g. social media messages, online advocacy materials and toolkits, fundraising and advocacy emails, website features and articles, traditional media toolkits and advocacy resources) a plus;
  • Demonstrated ability to research, write, fact-check, and edit a variety of communication pieces for target audiences with minimal supervision;
  • Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines, handle simultaneous assignments, and work within a team setting across varied time zones;
  • Strong coordination and organizational skills, with a proven ability to concurrently manage a large number and wide variety of projects with strict deadlines; and
  • Experience working on human rights or women’s rights, reproductive health and/or social issues a plus.
