Monitoring and Surveillance Officer, Nepal (Full-Time / 1 Year Fixed-Term Contract)

Role Profile:

ZSL is seeking a Monitoring and Surveillance Officer to support our South and Central Asia Conservation Programmes. The positions will be based in Banke-Bardia National Parks, Parsa Wildlife Reserve and Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, sitting within ZSL’s Nepal Country Programme Office.

The key objective of this role is the field implementation of activities related to supporting the law enforcement activities of Banke- Bardia National Parks, Sukla Phanta and Parsa Wildlife Reserves with regard to an IUCN/KfW-funded project. Working closely with the Project Manager, the post holder will achieve this objective by liaising with park authorities, project partner organisations and the local community.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Carry out a range of task aimed at providing policy, programme, coordination and advocacy support under the direct supervision of country manager.
  • Be responsible for coordinating with law enforcement agencies and providing support.
  • Liaison with partner organizations.
  • Planning and conducting field patrolling.
  • Collation and analysis of existing law enforcement data and ensure timely delivery of project activities.

Person Specification:

  • A Bachelor’s or Masters’ Degree in criminal justice, law enforcement (or relevant subject) or equivalent qualification or relevant level of work experience.
  • Extensive Forestry and Wildlife, Environmental science or relevant field is required
  • Prior working experience in law enforcement, surveillance and advocacy for anti-poaching, wildlife law or/and protected area management or extensive working experience in either the Military or Police with some experience working inside protected area or wildlife crime investigation is required.
  • Have good leadership qualities with ability to operate at very highest level of Government and lead a team in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Have strong organizational skills with ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to keep track of priorities and possess strong interpersonal and diplomatic skills.
  • Basic GIS skills with knowledge of database management will be essential for this position.
  • Willing to spend time in the field as necessary and show compassion and respect to nature and wildlife.
