Field Officer, Nepal (Full-Time / 1 Year Fixed-Term Contract)

Overview:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a leading international conservation, science and education charity. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries around the world and through education and engagement at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Role Profile:

ZSL is seeking two Field Officers to work for our South and Central Asia Conservation Progamme. The position will be based at one of the field locations in lowland Nepal, sitting within ZSL’s Nepal Country Programme.

The key objective of this role is the field implementation of biological monitoring and community support activities for the ZSL supported project at the field site. Working closely with the relevant senior managers, the post holder will achieve this objective by liaising with government, involved project partner organisations and the local community.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with Government agencies and partner organizations in implementation of the project activities
  • Planning and conducting field survey.
  • Work in close coordination with line manager and project staff to ensure the timely delivery of project activities.
  • Data analysis and quality report writing and
  • Overall management of the field stations.
     

Person Specification:

Ideally the successful candidate will:

  • Be educated to Masters’ Degree level in Animal Science, Forestry, Zoology, Wildlife and Environmental Science (Biodiversity Conservation and Wildlife Management) or equivalent qualification or have equivalent related field experience.
  • Have in-depth experience in biodiversity conservation, management and working with the communities.
  • Have a good understanding of biodiversity conservation issues in Nepal with sound knowledge on wildlife survey methodologies,
  • Have a good understanding of the culture and livelihoods related issues and opportunities for the lowland communities
  • Be able to design the surveys for various wildlife and communities living around the protected areas
  • Have prior wildlife habitat management and statistical skills to manage and analyse the data from wildlife surveys.
  • Have excellent written and spoken English with ability to deliver quality reports.
  • Have good communication skills as well as coordination with government agencies, conservation partners, communities and other project staffs.
  • Posses strong organisational skills with sound managerial skills will be considered merits for this position.
  • Be willing to spend time in field as necessary and show compassion and respect nature and wildlife.
