Organization Summary

Nepal eye hospital is the first hospital in Nepal dedicated to eye care service established in the year 1973. Before the establishment of this historical hospital, eye service was available at Bir Hospital as government owned general hospital with the few beds provided by the Government of Nepal. Realizing the urgency to make a separate eye hospital, Nepal Eye Hospital was legally established in March 1973 with active initiation of Dr. Ram Prasad Pokharel the icon ophthalmologist and other like-minded distinguished personalities. Since its establishment the Government of Nepal, Ministry of Health and Population has been continually providing financial assistance to the hospital and other staffs including ophthalmologists once working at the Ophthalmology department of the Bir Hospital has been transferred to the Hospital, hence referring Nepal Eye Hospital as the only government authorized eye hospital in the country. The hospital has seen phenomenal growth over the four decades, with an establishment of its own technologically well equipped modern facilities designed along the lines of finest eye hospitals in the region with assistance from various national and international agencies and Japan being the first one. With it's six operation theatres and most modern eye care equipment, the hospital provides service in an average over 400 patients every day. The hospital has a team of 14 highly qualified dedicated doctors representing all ophthalmic sub-specialties at present. Nepal eye hospital has been providing eye care service since last four decades. For about two decades, it was the only eye hospital in Nepal bearing the responsibility to provide eye care service for about 20 million people of the nation. The hospital was started with an objective of providing the best possible comprehensive eye-care services in the region, by most economical methods, with most modern & state of the art technology directed towards prevention, diagnosis and treatment, to all sections of society irrespective of caste, creed or economic considerations. The other objective being training, the hospital has been providing training in producing its own ophthalmic manpower in the country. As a pioneer institution in the field of eye care service in the country, Nepal Eye Hospital is being involved in the area of scientific research utilizing own resources to its maximum extent. At present Nepal Eye Hospital is a fully fledged eye hospital with all ophthalmic sub-specialties under one roof. Despite being a non-governmental organization (NGO) the Government of Nepal has continually been providing financial assistance to the hospital. The hospital, recently signed memorandum of understanding with Kansai Medical University, Takki Hospital, Japan for mutual cooperation regarding wide range of medical training and related services . The hospital has good relation with Lions Arabind International Center for Ophthalmology (LAICO), Arabind Hospital and has currently been using the Integrated Hospital Management System (IHMS) developed by the center. Besides, the hospital is looking forward to enhance relation with various national and international organizations dedicated towards ophthalmic services.
