Job Introduction

BBC World Service produces news content for millions of people in English and 42 other languages. 16 of those language services make up the Asia Region and BBC News Nepali is one of them, producing journalism in Nepali language.
We are looking for a Video Journalist to help lead the newsgathering operation and grow digital reach in the market.

Role Responsibility

This is a unique opportunity to join our Kathmandu bureau as a Video Journalist. You will be responsible for gathering and producing original video for our Facebook and YouTube platforms as well as overseeing live video for our regular interactive programmes. Your main responsibilities will include being responsible for originating creative and innovative ways of storytelling and implementing them for BBC News Nepali, especially for consumption on Facebook and YouTube.

Other responsibilities will include; to edit and produce engaging video content for multiple outlets and digital platforms in Nepali, making sure content is reversionable, to record video interviews and other types of original contents as required, ensuring the best standards of video production are set and adhered to.

The Ideal Candidate

To be considered for this role you would need knowledge of Nepal's current affairs, social life, and Nepali language as first langauge, ability to edit video contents including texts, captions and graphics in that language and very good English.
You'll need to have experience in creating and curating social and digital content in Nepali language, as well as a good feel for strong and distinctive stories along with being able to  produce, shoot and edit material, delivering highly shareable and engaging content.

In addition you will need to understand the language of digital newsgathering and have strong technical skills, in filming and editing, combined with an editorial background. You will be happy working on your own projects as well as with others in the teams.

Knowledge, skills, training and experience

Essential

  • Ability to gather and prepare audio and video material for use on any service, recognising the distinct requirements of different types of output, self-shooting and editing routinely as the main focus of the role.
  • Significant recent experience as a journalist, with a good knowledge of production techniques – especially self-shooting and editing.
  • Demonstrates sound editorial and policy decisions based upon a clear understanding of the BBC’s distinctive news agenda, the requirements of news and current affairs coverage and the audience.
  • Strong record of originating and developing stories for news programmes.
  • Ability to use technology as required, gathering material for broadcast.
  • Understands how a team works effectively.
  • Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understands how individual differences can benefit the BBC.
  • Effective planning and organising skills, ability to concentrate on several areas of work at one time, delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities.
