Job Description

Fixed-term Consultant for Governance, Peace and Security
Saferworld is an international non-governmental organisation working to prevent violent conflict and help build safer lives. It is based in the UK with programmes in Europe, Africa and Asia. Saferworld promotes the development of policies to help ensure that international actors support peacebuilding in conflict-affected states.

For 25 years, Saferworld has worked at the intersection of peace, development and security. Saferworld has been working in Nepal since 2009. We work on promoting cooperative approaches to community safety, understanding the relationship between gender, peace and security, early warning and early response (EWER), and supporting key actors in making local governance and public security processes more gender responsive, socially inclusive, conflict sensitive, transparent, and accountable.

Role:

The role will support and/or lead current and upcoming project implementation. It will also strongly support the Country Programme Manager with programme development and concept/proposal design and write-up, as well as fostering and expanding the Programme’s existing networks of donors, government authorities, and local NGO and start-up partners. The role will be based in Saferworld’s Kathmandu office and will work closely with, and under detailed instruction, from Saferworld Nepal Programme’s Country Manager.

Specific task contribution includes:

  • Working with local partners, coordinate the delivery of Nepal projects, including where possible using own expertise to deliver directly relevant training and other forms of related technical assistance;
  • Manage partnerships with local partners based on Saferworld’s partnership principles, ensuring effective cross-learning, capacity-building, and communication;
  • Ensure timely and high quality donor and internal reporting which effectively captures programme impact and contributes to institutional learning;
  • Actively contribute to the development and submission of relevant funding proposals and research for Saferworld’s Nepal Programme, especially in regards to EWER, governance and peacebuilidng, and Gender, Peace, & Security;
  • Ensure project designs maximise potential policy changes and implementation guidelines on key governance, peace and security, and gender issues in Nepal;
  • Actively contribute to Nepal and Asia regional programme annual & quarterly strategic plan implementation with reference to Saferworld’s organisation-wide strategy;
  • Actively contribute to and support the Nepal Programme in the implementation of a monitoring, learning and evaluation framework for the project;
  • Manage and expand existing Saferworld’s networks of donors, government authorities, and local NGO and start-up partners.

Timeframe: You will be contracted for 4 months period from the beginning of March – end June 2017. The contract is subject to extension upon satisfactory performance and as required by the organisation.
 

Person Specification:

  • A Masters’ degree in International Relations, Peace or Development Studies or a related subject Research or project experience in international relations, peacebuilding or development;
  • At least five years of experience including project management, programme development, research, and advocacy;
  • Strong organisational skills, including ability to manage multiple tasks with attention to detail and a methodical approach;
  • Excellent analytical abilities and proven ability to work under deadlines;
  • Ability to independently conceptualise and write analytical pieces for publication;
  • Good interpersonal skills and sensitivity to gender, cultural and ethnic diversity;
  • Fluency in English and Nepali (written and spoken);
  • Basic financial management skills.

Remuneration and expenses:
The consultant will receive competitive payment on monthly basis for four months.
