Program Officer - Media Monitoring and Analysis for the Nepal Monitor Project with Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP) in Kathmandu, Nepal (3 positions)

NepalMonitor.org is a COCAP protection and conflict prevention initiative, supported by PBI. Originally developed by pbi, it is an innovative tool for the protection of HRDs at risk. Using latest ICT-tools, NepalMonitor.org alerts local organisations in Nepal to human rights and security incidents in their area, and allows anyone to easily share incidents with local, national and international organisations. Contributors and users create a community and engage in cooperative action to protect themselves from human rights abuses and other security threats.

 

The Nepal Monitor Project is going to be expanded to 25 districts to establish a Peace Monitoring System in Nepal supported by The Asia Foundation. The project will strive to incorporate district-level newspaper reporting into its database. For this purpose, the COCAP | Nepal Monitor Project is looking for 3 Program Officers – Media Monitoring and Analysis.

 

Tasks

Data-entry of incident reports taken from national media and district-level newspapers, preparing short summaries of incidents in English and Nepali, mapping and coding of incident reports and conducting follow-up to verify reports by phone.

*    Review local media articles sent from the field.

*    Data entry into the NepalMonitor database including writing short summary descriptions in English and Nepali

*    Coding each incident according to monitoring guidelines

*    In coordination with the Field Coordinator, conduct follow-up on local newspaper reports to verify incidents with district focal persons and local journalists.

*    Assist in monthly collation of data-set

*    Assist in further conceptual development of the project

 

This is a position for 18 months with first 3 months of probation period.

Your Profile:

*    You have Bachelor’s degree in journalism, social science or other relevant fields and at least 3 years of work experience in relevant field(s)

*    You are interested in conflict analysis, violence monitoring, and human rights

*    You have excellent English and Nepali skills in speaking, reading and writing

*    You are proficient of Nepali texts using Preeti and/or Unicode essential

*    You have advanced skills in using Microsoft Excel. Database management experience is an advantage

*    You are detail-oriented

*    You are willing to work in a complex political and sociocultural environment

*    Some background in journalism is an advantage

*    You have strong interpersonal skills and enjoy to work as part of a team

*    You are citizen of Nepal

Remuneration will be NRs. 34,240 per month with additional yearly increments and bonuses.
