Job Description

We are a partnership between a UK-based registered charity and a community-based enterprise that produces yarn, woven and knitted products from stems of the Giant Himalayan Nettle. The project is supported by the Big Lottery Fund.

Job Specification

We seek an enterprising person to enhance the quality, range and presentation of these products and to actively market them in Kathmandu and around the world. Promising progress has already been made in selling yarn, cloth, scarves, shawls and mitts, for example in Nepal, UK, and Finland.

The candidate should:

1.    Have a track record in marketing of hand-made products or products made using village-scale appropriate technologies;

2.    Have excellent spoken and written English and Nepali;

3.    Be prepared to travel regularly to Sankhuwasaba district, where the nettle is produced, to work with sellers in Kathmandu, and to liaise with the project partners in UK, Nepal and India.

4.    Have well-developed computer skills, and be able to develop a website devoted to nettle products.

5.    Be a self-starter, able to work on your own initiative from home, and be proactive in developing the products, organising promotional events and seeking out buyers/customers;

6.    Be able to train others, such that they can take over the marketing functions once your contract is complete.

7.    Be capable of developing excellent working relationships with producer groups, a nettle association based in Khandbari, NGO staff, a small marketing enterprise based in Kathmandu and IT specialists.

8.    Be sympathetic to the situation and needs of hill-tribe people, especially to ensure that women nettle producers benefit fairly from their work.
