Assistant Editors (Web)

The position’s primary requirement is the ability to edit full-length articles of the kind carried in Himal. Applicants have to be able to turn around article drafts on a wide range of topics, in accordance with the magazine’s in-house style. Besides foolproof competence in English-language editing, applicants must have a keen interest in Southasian history, economy, culture, geopolitics and current affairs. Applicants should have the ability to support all aspects of the magazine’s production – both online and in print. This includes keeping up to date with a wide range of issues related to Southasia, to develop story ideas, to help commission and secure articles, do fact-checking, and supervise interns. The position reports to the Editor.

Assistant Editors (web) will also help run the Himal website. This will require past experience with WordPress platform, a graphics editing software like Adobe Photoshop, a pdf editing software like Adobe Acrobat, and some understanding of HTML coding. As part of running the website, they will be responsible for the uploading content on the website, updating and maintaining our social media and other online accounts (eg. email, 2Checkout, Mailchimp), overseeing and updating the website’s various sections, and liasoning  between the editorial team and the website developers regarding enhancements and changes to our website. They will also be supervising the design elements of the Himal website, identifying glitches and suggesting improvements, preparing ebooks of our print quarterlies, monitoring website and social network traffic, suggesting strategies for improving website and social media traffic, and be available to help deal with major website/social-media emergencies.

Work Experience: One-year experience editing, reporting, research and writing in mainstream media, though work with academic journals is also relevant. Experience in online journalism is an asset.

The position: This is a full-time position based in Kathmandu. Salary is between NPR 35,000-40,000 per month and commensurate with skill set and experience. Perks are negotiable. Himal Southasian provides health insurance. This is a full-time position open from August 2015.
